Head 30km north from the Brisbane CBD and you will find yourself in Petrie, home to the beautiful grassy, partially wooded Sweeney’s Reserve. The Reserve is a go to for dog loving locals of Brisbane as it is fenced on three sides and uses the Pine River as a natural barrier on the fourth. Making it the perfect spot for dogs to run off-lead and have the time of their lives chasing sticks in the water and relaxing in the natural shaded spots.
I was fortunate enough to visit this location with three beautiful dogs who have lots of energy and enjoy playing in the water. Through this post our models are Nala (6yo. Doberman), Ruby (4yo. Border Collie), and Indi (18mo. Sharpei Mix).

The beautiful natural landscape that Sweeney Reserve presents is an inviting opportunity to capture the dogs in a raw environment. These images were specifically taken to ensure the dogs are framed in such a way that uses the surrounding landscape as a means to draw your eye to the subject. The depth of field focuses on the plane that the dog is captured within and the background shrubbery consists of natural tones and colours.

Not only does Sweeney Reserve have the river bank that the dogs can swim in, it also has an abundance of natural dirt trails. These trails are a great use in dog photography as the help lead the audiences eye to the subject without adding much of a distraction. Seen below is Ruby playing her favourite game, chase the ball.
Hint: Using your dogs favourite treat or toys is an excellent way to gain their attention, help lead their eye directly down the lens of the camera, and to capture great action shots.
